Endure the Bear Race Report

Wow! The Endure the Bear trail run is crazy hard...and crazy fun!

Yesterday I ran in the Endure the Bear 30K trail run up here in Big Bear Lake. My Mom and Dad drove in for the week from Kentucky and Paul ran the 15K. The course was crazy hard, which is good, and was also the most beautiful run I have ever done. The first 5k climbs from the village of Big Bear Lake (6800') up to the south ridge line (8200') which make for one hell of a start. This was the same for both the 15K and the 30K. From there it was a rolling run along the ridge for a few miles. The 15K split off about halfway along the ridge and had a nice descent back into town. The 30K took a turn onto some crazy technical single-track for a trip down the mountain and then back up. From the top again it was a nice descent back into town on the fire roads. I felt good but unfortunately my knee started killing me about half-way through and I had to walk for quite a bit after that. Some real strong runners showed up. One kid took a wrong turn and ran an extra 8K before passing me on an uphill asking what place he was in. He ended up finishing 2nd but they give him the overall win due to the mix up.There was also a 50K race and the dude who one that was flying coming in just after 4 hours! I managed a top 5 finish overall and first in my age group which was cool. Paul took 2nd in the 15k old man's division which was pretty awesome as well! After the finish we had some pizza across the street at Paoli's and listened to some killer acoustic reggae music waiting for the awards. The handed out goodies for everybody who completed all 4 events this year and Conquered the Bear. I'm going to win that thing next year! I had a blast and am stoked such cool events are going down where I live!

(Dad took 2nd in his AG!)

(Some podium time!)

While the folks were here we snuck down to Joshua Tree so I could introduce them to my favorite place in the world. It ended up being a gorgeous day, high 70's and sunny. I took them to Barker Dam and showed them Gunsmoke and Streetcar Named Desire. Then we had a nice hike up to Ryan Mountain to check the views and the sunset. Awesome to show my parents where I play and live!
